Eligibility

The Propel Postdoctoral Scholars Program is open to individuals who:

  • Are U.S citizens, U.S permanent residents, undocumented childhood arrivals, or undocumented individuals who have been granted temporary permission to stay in the U.S. (Dreamers/DACA-mented). For permanent residents, you must have your green card in hand within 6 months of the fellowship start date.
  • Are from populations historically underrepresented in the US biological, biomedical, and/or population-based research enterprise. These include, but are not limited to:
    • Individuals with disabilities, defined as those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
    • Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, defined as those who meet two or more of the criteria described on this page.
    • Individuals who identify as a sexual or gender minority who is underrepresented on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
    • Others whose backgrounds and experiences would would enrich the representation among the professoriate in their academic fields.
  • Are researchers in biological, biomedical, and/or population-based sciences disciplines. If you are seeking fellowships or opportunities in other disciplines at Stanford or opportunities outside of the School of Medicine, please visit this page.
  • Hold a Ph.D. and/or MD/Ph.D. (or equivalent), which must be conferred by the start of the award term.
  • Have obtained a Ph.D. and/or MD/Ph.D. (or equivalent) no more than 24 months prior to the start of funding OR  have no more than 24 total months of postdoctoral research experience (not including additional months in their Ph.D. lab post-conferral) at the time of the application due date.
  • Are in residence at Stanford and have started their postdoc by January 1 of the calendar year they apply.
  • Are currently or plan to be mentored by a faculty member who has a primary faculty (not courtesy) appointment in the Stanford School of Medicine.
    • A faculty member may serve as the primary mentor for only one Propel scholar at a time.
    • Propel requires that you have an established relationship with a faculty mentor by the due date. You may submit Part 1 while still exploring, but Part 2 cannot be submitted without a primary faculty sponsor.
