Nowah Afangbedji

Dr. Nowah Afangbedji is a postdoctoral scholar in the Porteus lab at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine. His research focuses on using the CRISPR/AAV system to develop a gene engineering strategy aimed at correcting the beta-globin gene in hemoglobinopathies. Additionally, Dr. Afangbedji serves on the American Society of Hematology’s trainee council, where he contributes to developing programs designed to enhance career opportunities in science and medicine for underrepresented groups. He is dedicated to advancing health equity and has mentored numerous high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. Dr. Afangbedji earned his Ph.D. at Howard University, where his professional and academic work in the Nekhai lab focused on identifying early biomarkers of kidney disease in sickle cell patients, studying iron metabolism, and exploring the natural resistance of HIV-1 in sickle cell disease.
